A Pyrrhic Victory
Today is joyous news. For today I emerge the clear victor against the forces of darkness. Perhaps a bit of a expination is needed here. Yesterday at around 3 o'clock our network started getting flooded with network traffic. Investigation into this revealed that it was a virus come to perpetuate evil upon the good users of the Bradford NHS network. That was it's first mistake. For I am the protector of this network and you shall not prevail against me.
Quickly swinging into action I assembled my crack team of Network commandos made myself a cup of tea grabbed a bourbon and started formulating a plan.
First off the question of why hadn't our antivirus software picked this up? We've recently moved to a new ePO server that manages all our antivirus needs and things, checking that we we're all upto date. We rang our Antivirus provider to check if they knew anything about this. They didn't. Looks like we're flying solo on this one.
I'm too tired mentally (and physically I'm ill as well) now to go into the full account (and it's a boring recount anyway) of what we did but suffice to say 24 hours of hard graft later we've got a solution for the virus sent it off to our Anti-Virus provider who are going to release details of the virus and the fix to the world soon.
It's a completely new virus and we kicked it's arse. So remember next time you hear about how shit NHS IT is remember that I'm out there on the front lines saving your arses from viruses.
