"Whys he got tentacles on his head uncle Wallz?" chirps a curious niece.
"That's Bib Fortuna, he's a Twi'lek and they have those because....they're aliens" I reply somewhat unsure of what you can say to explain costume design to a inquisitive young mind.
This seems to pacify her and she nods her head knowingly and we return to watching Star Wars.
"Who's that?" She asks again.
"That's Jango Fett" quips the nephew between handfuls of pop corn
"Not quite" I reply "That's Boba Fett, Jangos son. They look very similar because they both wear Mandolorian armor"
"Ahhh" muses the nephew and nods his head slowly in thought.
What a wealth of crap I have in my head.
The niece gasps and snuggles in a bit closer to me. "What's the slug?"
"Jabba the Hutt, he's a baddie" the nephew says beating me to the punch with a much More succinct answer.
I just hope she doesn't ask why he would make a human dress up in a bikini and about all the rapey undercurrents between him and Leia.
"Uncle Wallz?" she politely starts
"Yes?"
"What's a fur-mall deta*mumble*"
"A Thermal Detonator? It's a bomb"
"Oh.."
"Why did he hit the Gold robot"
"Because Jabba didn't like what the bounty hunter said, so he took it out on the messenger"
She looks confused.
"Because he's a baddie" interjects the nephew.
The niece nods.
"If you just watch the film it'll answer many if these questions for you"
And allow me to watch it with out feeling like I'm on some bizarre version of Master Mind
Oh but if only she would, but the questions keep coming.
"Who's that?"
"Lando Calrissian"
Apparently the only black guy in space.
"Whys he crying?"
"Because the Rancor was his pet, and it just had a door drop on it's head"
"What's that thing!?"
"That's the Sarlac pit"
"What's she doing to the slug"
"Erm...killing him"
"Why?" She seems very unsure about this one.
"....because he's the baddie?" I try.
"Oh, Ok!" Apparently that was the right answer and she happily continues watching the film.
"Uncle Wallz?"
Oh god please don't be about to ask me why they're letting a ship through using an old code.
"Yes?"
"How do you know all this?"
I don't really know what to say.
"Uncle Wallz knows everything about Star Wars" Says the nephew radiating awe, respect, approval and said in sure a way that means this can never be doubted.
